How Did This Accident Occur?
Anytime there’s a driver on the wrong side of the road this early in the morning, it’s a big red flag they may have been under the influence of alcohol. That might sound like something authorities would immediately call out, but sometimes it’s a more complex investigation than people realize.
I’ve been a part of hundreds of investigations into drunk drivers. It’s not always as simple as just getting a breath test result. Sometimes, investigations have to dig into credit card statements, video from a bar or restaurant where the driver was drinking, witness testimony, and even social media posts and texts. That can all combine to convincingly show someone was intoxicated and may even show the alcohol provider played a role in the crash as well. That’s why alcohol isn’t always immediately called out.
That said, it’s also entirely possible alcohol wasn’t a factor here. Maybe the driver was extremely tired. Maybe they were on their phone, and they drifted over the center line. These are things that a simple charge for being on the wrong side of the road might not address on its own. Maybe authorities authorities feel they don’t need to dig into the whole story to pursue their charges. However, families deserve to know the full story, and it’s often a crucial step in getting them the best resolution possible. So, whatever led to this crash, my hope is the right investigators are taking steps to consider all contributing factors.
