Accident Report

March 5, 2026, John Abbe was injured due to a truck accident at approximately 7:00 a.m. along U.S. Highway 84.

According to authorities, 42-year-old John Abbe was traveling on a southeast bound Harley-Davidson motorcycle on U.S. 84 (Slaten Highway) at the Peach Avenue intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a northbound Ford F-250 commercial pickup truck with a trailer in tow entered the intersection at an unsafe time, purportedly failing to yield the right-of-way to highway traffic during a left turn from a stop sign. A collision consequently occurred between the left side of the pickup’s trailer and the front-end of the Harley-Davidson.

Abbe reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

The general public does not know what was going on inside that pickup truck at the time of the accident. I’m no exception, but I have had the opportunity to analyze thousands of accidents over the last three decades. There are a couple of concerns that come to my mind which I hope will be addressed in the investigation.

First, the Ford was apparently being used for commercial purposes. Was the driver familiar with the area, or was he depending on the guidance of a GPS? While convenient tools, a GPS can split a driver’s attention between their environment and the interior of the vehicle in an unsafe way.

Second, was the pickup’s driver properly trained so as to safely be able to tow a trailer? The collision, after all, was between the motorcycle and the trailer, not the pickup truck. If he was not familiar enough with the extra room taken up by a towed trailer and the time it takes to clear an intersection, then that could have played a role in the collision. That kind of training is an obligation of the company who owns the truck. If they put an underqualified driver on the road, then the responsibility for the outcome of the wreck could extend outside those at the physical crash scene.

When push comes to shove, we won’t know what actually happened in this wreck until the investigation is complete. Hopefully, the authorities have the resources to complete a thorough and meticulous investigation. Should that turn out not to be the case, perhaps a third party investigation should be considered.
