How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people are quick to cast blame on the motorcyclist when it comes to single-vehicle motorcycle accidents. After over three decades in this line of business, though, I’ve come to think that motorcyclist really get a bad rap. I’ve seen plenty of cases over the years in which evidence that goes against the grain of stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigations. That is why, as a general rule, I’m slow to jump to conclusions.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this accident than anyone else should outside of the investigation. As far as I am aware, rider error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, the accident could have been caused by something wrong with the motorcycle itself. They might be smaller than passenger vehicles, but motorcycles are still complex machines. What if it suffered tire failure? Or maybe the brakes stopped working at a critical moment? Has anyone considered a throttle issue or steering mechanism problem? Honestly, the list of possible issues could go on and on.
Hopefully authorities get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the motorcycle in order to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck. If they fail to take that step, though, then a third party investigation can always do so, instead. Plus it never hurts to have a second perspective go over things and make sure nothing important falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear understanding of how and why it happened. That kind of clarity just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
