How Did This Accident Occur?
People often see a single-vehicle accident and assume the driver must have done something wrong. It is true that things like distracted driving and fatigue are common, but there are plenty of other possibilities which drivers don’t necessarily have control over.
Let me give people something to consider. I’ve investigated many single-vehicle wrecks which involved a tire blowout, for example. In the initial reports, though, it wasn’t obvious that the crash happened due to tire failure. Authorities are not always able to tell the difference between a tire blowing out as a result of the crash versus the blowout causing the crash. And if a driver has serious injuries, they may not be able to give their side of the story right away.
So in the public eye, all we see is yet another crash where someone loses control of their vehicle. But if the assumption is just that the victim made a mistake, that can easily prove to be wrong once the evidence comes to light. So, I’ve always found it’s just best to prioritize gathering the facts. Regardless of what leads to a crash, this can help ensure that victims at least can tell their side of the story fairly.
