How Did This Accident Occur?
While I can’t confirm anything beyond what’s already been reported publicly, some photos from the crash scene raise familiar red flags. I saw the van reportedly involved in the crash with pretty severe rear-end damage. That’s usually a sign that someone was speeding or looking at their phone instead of watching traffic. It’s possible something less common occurred, such as defective brakes, a malfunctioning crash avoidance system, or some sort of medical issue. I think it’s also important to consider alcohol, which is generally more common on weekend afternoons than it is on weekday nights.
The question is if authorities will dedicate the time and resources needed to investigate all of these possible factors. It might surprise folks just how often authorities scratch the surface and move on before doing a complete accident reconstruction. Not all department prioritize traffic accidents, so even skilled and motivated officers may not have the proper equipment or enough time to really preserve evidence.
That’s why I’ve always found independent investigators to be a valuable path for victims and families to consider. At worst, they’re able to confirm what details authorities come up with, which can be a significant reassurance on its own. At best, though, independent investigators can catch unusual or complex factors authorities failed to look into on their own. That can be the difference between a family being left in the dark and a family getting clear answers and seeing accountability for any wrongdoers who may have contributed to the crash.
