According to officials, 35-year-old Deisy Jaime Navarro was in a Nissan Rogue which was going southbound along Trail Lake. Along the I-20 service road, there was apparently a police chase occurring involving Fort Worth Police. The vehicle they were pursuing reportedly crashed into vehicles to force its way through the intersection, and it ended up crashing with Jaime Navarro’s vehicle.

Due to the collision, the Nissan Rogue overturned, apparently causing serious injuries to Jaime Navarro. The driver that ran the light apparently fled the scene on foot, though details suggest authorities may have the driver’s identity.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If authorities did identify and locate the runaway driver, they’ve likely put plans into motion to see that person face consequences. But I rarely see authorities address issues beyond a reckless driver after a crash like this. Maybe there isn’t more to the story, but if they just say the story begins and ends with charging a reckless driver, they might miss something important.

For example, this crash involved a rollover, and the person in that vehicle was seriously injured. After something like that, prudent accident reconstructionists would take the time to look into the integrity of the vehicle and whether or not it adequately protected the driver to the best of its ability. If not, there could be vehicle safety defects that led to serious injuries which could have otherwise been avoided.

Authorities can look into these sorts of possible factors, but if they find out that there’s someone to charge after a crash, they tend to put all of their focus on that reckless driver and completely ignore the possibility there may have been other contributing factors.

That’s why I tell folks they might not be seeing the whole story even in situations where authorities have a suspect and even charges. More thorough investigations could show that holding that person accountable is just part of the larger picture. Did authorities ever find out whether or not that’s true here?
