How Did This Accident Occur?
A jackknifed semi-truck usually happens after the driver loses control, possibly due to speed, handling or mechanical issues. The only way to figure out what caused this crash is to wait until the investigation is complete.
In my experience, wrecks like this are often attributable to decisions made before the truck hits the road. Was the driver properly trained? Was the truck adequately inspected? Did the trucking company have policies in place to limit fatigue or high-risk behavior?
Investigators should be able to provide answers so the Volkswagen driver’s family does not have any lingering questions about what happened on U.S. 83.
