My hope is that authorities take this more seriously than they usually do with single-vehicle accidents. Frankly, they tend to be a low priority for police. Even when officers are experienced and motivated to get answers, their supervisors likely won’t give them the equipment or time they need to really be thorough. That can leave all kinds of unanswered questions.
Was there some kind of mechanical defect? Is this a poorly maintained roadway? Did a lack of signage or lighting contribute to the crash? Did the driver experience some kind of medical episode? Likely or not, these things happen. While it is true that driver error is common in these situations, that’s no excuse to just jump to conclusions when there’s a family out there in need of answers. Getting those answers means letting the evidence speak for itself, but that requires investigators who will have the time, tools, and training to actually get that evidence.
