Accident Report

February 24, 2026, one person was injured due to a car accident shortly before 12:15 a.m. along the McDermott Freeway frontage road.

According to authorities, a 69-year-old man was traveling in an eastbound Toyota RAV4 on Fredericksburg Road at the intersection with the southbound frontage road for McDermott Freeway when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Durango allegedly entered the intersection against a red light. A collision consequently occurred between the front-end of the Durango and the front-left quarter of the Toyota.

The man from the Toyota reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

This accident seems like a cut-and-dried case of driver error at first glance. I, however, have become skeptical over the last thirty years spent analyzing car accidents. I’ve seen plenty of cases where the investigation turned up evidence of things that were not apparent at the surface level of the wreck. That is why I’m not going to jump to conclusions.

To be completely transparent, I do not know any more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to suggest a hypothetical. The initial reports state that the Durango ran a red light. I’d just like to say that authorities are not infallible; they might have gotten it wrong. What if the traffic signal at the intersection malfunctioned and gave contradicting lights to the involved drivers? Traffic signals, after all, aren’t perfect, either.

Speaking of imperfect, what if there was a malfunction with the Toyota’s seat belt? It might be important to look into whether or not it performed as it should have at the time of the collision. If it did malfunction, then the man’s injuries might have ended up being more severe than they should have been.

I just hope that the authorities who are investigation are being meticulous and open minded. If, for any reason, it seems like they are being shortsighted, then a third party investigation can always be called on to make sure all the bases are covered.
