Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With single-vehicle wrecks, there’s always a concern about how thorough authorities were. Officials can often jump to conclusions, and I get calls all the time from folks who feel authorities either didn’t spend enough time on the investigations or were more focused on blaming someone than actually hearing the full story. That’s why I’ve found a few key questions that can help gauge how thorough authorities are being in their efforts.

Did investigators take the time and use the right tools to fully analyze the crash? A single-vehicle accident can have many contributing factors, including road hazards, visibility issues, or mechanical failures. If authorities conducted only a surface-level investigation, they may have missed critical details that could explain why the crash happened.

Did they consider whether a vehicle defect played a role? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or sudden power loss—could have caused the driver to lose control. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries may have been more severe than necessary. Were investigators thorough in inspecting the vehicle before potential evidence was lost?

Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may have stored crucial data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. GPS records, cellphone activity, and any nearby security or traffic camera footage could also provide valuable insights. Did authorities take steps to preserve this information before it was lost?

If authorities can show they have clear answers to these concerns, it’s likely they took investigations seriously. However, if they can’t address these concerns, that may be a sign they didn’t do a thorough job, which could mean there is important evidence not being considered. It’s reasonable in those situations that folks may feel more comfortable if a second set of eyes looked over the details.
