When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, it can surprise people how little attention they get. I get calls all the time from folks who feel authorities mishandled investigations or were too quick to rush to judgment. Single-vehicle wrecks make up a significant portion of those calls. Generally speaking, a helpful measure people can take is to follow up with authorities and gauge the kind of effort they’re putting into the investigations.

For example, did authorities investigating the crash have the resources and expertise needed to conduct a detailed investigation? A single-vehicle crash might involve unseen factors like road hazards, debris, poor visibility, or even a driver’s attempt to avoid an obstacle. Did investigators document the scene thoroughly, including tire marks, points of impact, and potential hazards? Were environmental conditions, such as weather or lighting, carefully considered? Without a meticulous examination, vital clues can slip through the cracks.

Further, it’s important to know whether the vehicle itself might have played a role in the crash due to a defect. A mechanical failure—like a brake malfunction, steering issue, or tire blowout—can cause even an experienced driver to lose control. On top of that, failures in safety features such as seatbelts or airbags can turn what should have been a minor incident into something far more serious. A forensic inspection of the vehicle is necessary to uncover these issues and ensure they are properly addressed.

It’s also important to confirm if investigators have gathered and preserved all available electronic evidence. Vehicles today are equipped with Engine Control Modules (ECMs) that store critical data, such as speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, cellphone data, GPS logs, and surveillance footage from nearby cameras can provide further insights into the events surrounding the incident. Obvious as this type of evidence may seem, authorities can easily overlook it if they don’t take proper steps to pull it and preserve it quickly.

All said and done, victims and families sometimes find that authorities adequately address their concerns. They can certainly do good investigations if they have a mind to. Other times, though, they fail to meet this standard, and victims and families end up with unanswered questions and doubts. That’s when it may be necessary to have more thorough independent investigators look into things to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
