Accident Report
May 9, 2026, Camilo Daza and another person were injured due to a car accident just before 5:30 p.m. along State Highway 148.
According to authorities, 20-year-old Camilo Daza was traveling in a westbound Infiniti Q50 on Farm to Market 174 at the State Highway 148 intersection when the accident took place. At the intersection, F.M. 174 traffic is controlled by stop signs while cross traffic on the highway is not. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Infiniti allegedly entered the intersection at an unsafe time, failing to yield the right of way at a stop sign. A collision consequently occurred between the Infiniti and the front-end of a northbound Hyundai Elantra occupied by a 42-year-old man from Duncan, Texas.
Both Daza and the Duncan man reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When faced with accidents where one vehicle allegedly fails to yield at a stop sign, most people are content to simply assume it was the fault of the person behind the wheel. However, after over thirty years in this line of work, I’ve learned not to make assumptions. Why? Because I have seen plenty of cases over the years where, despite how things appeared on the surface, the investigations ended up unearthing evidence of less likely causes.
To be clear, I do not wish to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation would. As far as I am aware, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the Infiniti’s unfortunate timing in entering the intersection was due to something like brake failure? I am aware that it is not extremely likely, but neither is is outside of the realm of possibilities. Additionally, was the Elantra using its autonomous functions? If so, why did it fail to avoid a collision?
In-depth vehicle inspections done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role, rather than allowing them to fly under the radar. Hopefully the authorities get them done. If they fail to take that step, though, then a third party investigation can always be brought in to do so, instead. That way nothing important falls through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear understanding of how and why it happened. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
