On one of the biggest drinking holidays, it’s sadly unsurprising to see a crash like this happen. What would be a shame, though, is if the investigations into it began and ended at the crash scene.
On these big holidays, there are a lot of local bars and other establishments who take advantage of the occasion and end up over-serving customers. In Texas, establishments can be held responsible when that over-service leads to drunk driving accidents. Not only is that important for accountability, but it’s also important to remind negligent alcohol providers of their obligation to Texas law. This helps put them on the straight-and-narrow, making the roads safer for everyone.
So, if alcohol was indeed a factor here, seeing the alleged drunk driver held accountable would obviously be a step in the right direction. But to consider the matter truly resolved, there also needs to be an investigation into where that alcohol came from.
