When a crash involves three vehicles and multiple injuries—one of them critical—it’s easy to focus on the immediate aftermath: road closures, emergency response, and concern for those hurt. But once the dust settles, the most pressing question becomes: what actually caused the crash? In order to answer that, we need to approach the incident by asking three essential questions that guide any meaningful investigation.
First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the crash? A three-vehicle collision at an intersection like Weber Road and Holly Road often presents a complex scene. Determining who entered the intersection when, whether traffic signals were functioning properly, and if any driver made a sudden or unexpected move are all details that need to be sorted out. A proper investigation would involve scene documentation, interviews with those involved and any witnesses, and possibly a review of traffic signal timing if applicable. The quality of this work depends heavily on the training and resources available to the investigating agency—and unfortunately, those aren’t always consistent from one jurisdiction to another.
Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? When multiple vehicles are involved, there’s always the possibility that one of them experienced a mechanical issue—such as brake failure, a steering problem, or even a malfunction in an electronic driver assistance system—that set off a chain reaction. These are not far-fetched scenarios, but they often go uninvestigated unless someone takes specific steps to preserve the vehicles and examine them thoroughly. If a vehicle is released to a towing yard or repaired too quickly, any physical evidence of a defect may be lost forever.
Third, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? Each vehicle likely contains an engine control module (ECM), often referred to as the vehicle’s “black box,” which may record crucial data such as speed, brake application, and steering input in the seconds leading up to the crash. This kind of information can help confirm or refute witness statements and clarify how the crash actually happened. In addition to black box data, nearby surveillance footage, dashcam recordings, and even phone records can be essential in painting a complete picture of the events. But time is a major factor—if this data isn’t secured early, it may be overwritten or lost.
At the end of the day, four people were injured in this crash—one of them critically. The community owes it to those individuals to go beyond surface-level explanations and ensure that every avenue of investigation is pursued. By asking these three questions and acting on the answers, we can ensure that the cause of the crash is truly understood—not just assumed.
