Two people were hospitalized Sunday morning following a three-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck and an electric vehicle on Route 23 near Marengo, Illinois. The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts responded to the 3800 block of North Route 23 around 10:50 a.m. and found all three vehicles spread across roughly 1,200 feet of roadway. Officials reported moderate to heavy damage, and both injured individuals were transported to area hospitals. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

When a crash involves that much damage and leads to multiple hospitalizations, I think it’s important to take a close look at how the semi-truck was being operated and whether anything like speed, distraction, or mechanical failure contributed to what happened.

How Thoroughly Was the Semi-Truck’s Operation Examined?

Given the extent of the damage and the large area over which the vehicles came to rest, investigators will likely review how the semi-truck was being operated at the time of the crash. Was the driver following traffic laws and maintaining an appropriate speed and distance? Did the driver react in time once the situation developed? These are important questions to answer when a commercial vehicle is involved, particularly given their size and momentum.

Could Fatigue or Distraction Have Contributed?

Crashes that happen over such a long stretch of roadway sometimes raise concerns about reaction times. If the semi-truck driver was momentarily distracted or dealing with fatigue, it could have delayed their ability to respond, leading to or worsening the collision. Investigators will likely check for signs of distracted driving or violations of hours-of-service regulations that may suggest the driver was operating beyond safe limits.

What Evidence Should Be Reviewed to Understand the Crash?

To piece together what happened, investigators should examine the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the semi-truck, which may show whether the driver braked or accelerated leading up to the crash. Surveillance or dash camera footage could provide valuable insight into the moments before the impact. It’s also important to inspect the semi’s brakes, tires, and load stability to rule out any mechanical issues or shifting cargo that may have contributed.

Why Getting the Full Picture Requires Investigation

When a crash sends multiple people to the hospital, it's essential to examine every factor, especially when a semi-truck is involved. While the cause hasn’t been confirmed, a full investigation can determine whether the commercial vehicle was being operated safely and whether any mechanical issues or preventable errors played a role. Only a detailed review of all of the evidence can help determine how and why this crash happened.
