A collision between a NJ Transit bus and a PSEG utility truck in Newark sent multiple people to the hospital on Tuesday morning. Newark Police say they responded to the intersection of 15th Avenue and Bedford Street at 10:46 a.m. The bus, occupied by a driver and 12 adult passengers, allegedly crashed with the utility truck under circumstances still under investigation. All occupants of the bus were transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, along with the driver of the utility truck. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Given the involvement of two large commercial vehicles, investigators will need to determine how the collision occurred and whether vehicle condition, driver behavior, or other factors played a role.
Could Mechanical Issues Have Contributed?
Mechanical problems such as brake failure, steering defects, or worn suspension components could make it difficult for either driver to avoid a collision in an intersection. Both vehicles should be thoroughly inspected, with special attention given to the braking systems, steering assemblies, and tires. Reviewing maintenance logs will help determine whether any known issues were ignored or improperly addressed before the crash.
Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Played a Role?
Commercial drivers often face long hours and multiple stops, which can increase the likelihood of fatigue or distraction. Investigators should review the bus driver’s and utility truck driver’s schedules to determine if fatigue was a factor. In-cab camera footage, GPS data, and mobile device records can help identify whether either driver’s attention was diverted in the moments before the crash.
What Types of Evidence Should Be Examined?
Key evidence includes Engine Control Module (ECM) data from both vehicles, maintenance and inspection records, and any video footage from dash cameras, traffic cameras, or nearby businesses. Scene evidence such as skid marks, impact points, and debris distribution can also help reconstruct the collision. Witness statements from passengers, the utility truck driver, and bystanders may further clarify the sequence of events.
Why a Full Investigation Is Crucial
When two large commercial vehicles are involved in a collision that injures multiple people, understanding the precise cause is essential. A thorough review of driver actions, vehicle condition, and other contributing factors will help ensure accountability and provide answers for those affected.
