Examining the Semi vs. Motorcycle Crash on I-70 in Montgomery County, MO

On Thursday afternoon, a 63-year-old Las Vegas man was seriously injured in a crash involving a semi-truck in Montgomery County, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at 1:45 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 70, where traffic was slowing due to the presence of an emergency vehicle. A 59-year-old man from Odin, Illinois, was driving a 2005 Freightliner and allegedly failed to reduce speed in time, striking the rear of the motorcyclist’s 2021 Harley Davidson Roadking. The motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

I've seen many cases where a semi-truck strikes a smaller vehicle that has slowed or stopped for road conditions, and it always raises serious concerns about attentiveness and vehicle condition. Investigators will likely need to determine not just what the traffic conditions were at the time, but also whether the semi-truck driver was operating safely and whether the truck itself was road worthy.

Was the Truck Driver Distracted or Fatigued?

In cases like this, one of the first questions that often needs answering is whether distraction or fatigue played a role. It's not uncommon for long-haul drivers to experience fatigue, especially if they are pushing up against their hours-of-service limits. Investigators may want to look into the trucker’s driving logs, recent break periods, and GPS data to determine how long they had been on the road before the crash. Likewise, any sign of cell phone use, navigation system input, or other distractions around the time of the incident should be reviewed carefully.

Mechanical Issues Could Also Be a Factor

Another possibility worth examining is whether the semi-truck had any mechanical problems that prevented it from stopping in time. Investigators should take a close look at the braking system, including brake wear, air pressure levels, and response times. If the 2005 Freightliner’s brakes were degraded or improperly maintained, it could have significantly affected stopping distance. The Engine Control Module (ECM) may also contain pre-impact data that shows how the truck was responding in the seconds leading up to the crash.

Why Evidence Review Is Crucial in a Rear-End Semi Crash

Rear-end crashes involving motorcycles are especially dangerous, and in my experience, they often point to either a lapse in driver awareness or a mechanical failure. That’s why gathering and preserving critical evidence, such as dash camera footage, ECM data, and witness statements, is so important. Without it, it becomes difficult to assess what exactly led to the crash.

Why a Thorough Investigation Is the Only Way to Get the Full Picture

A serious crash like this deserves a full and careful review. While it's clear that the semi struck the motorcycle from behind, that fact alone doesn’t explain why the crash occurred or whether it could have been avoided. Investigators will need to ask every relevant question, examine the truck’s condition and the driver’s conduct, and piece together an accurate timeline of what happened. That's the only way to provide clear answers to those affected and assign accountability where necessary.
