It’s an unfortunate reality that single-vehicle accidents like this one aren’t generally viewed as a high priority. Many people, investigators sometimes among them, chalk up those crashes to driver error and assume there’s little else to say. Jumping to conclusions isn’t fair to the victim, though, because many possible factors in a single-vehicle wreck are entirely out of the driver’s hands. Without an open mind and a careful investigation, those crucial details might go unnoticed and wrong conclusions could be reached.
Here are just a few of the many questions that need answers in pursuit of the whole story: How steep was the curve in the road? Was anything hazardous on its surface? Are the roads in that county generally in good repair? Does the region get wildlife on the road, like deer? Was the vehicle malfunctioning or defective? How is the lighting in that area? Is it possible someone else ran the victim off the road? Could the driver have had a medical emergency? Was the injured passenger able to explain what she thinks happened to investigators?
The point of all those details isn’t to overcomplicate things or get lost in the weeds. The truth is that few accidents are really as simple as a few sentences in the news make them sound, and every accident victim deserves the dignity and reassurance of a careful and thorough investigation. That’s why every possibility must be considered, at the very least to rule them out. Did that happen here?
