Malcom, IA — December 27, 2024, one person was killed and four were injured in multi-vehicle truck accident at around 5:30 p.m. on Interstate Highway 80.
According to authorities, an 18-wheeler occupied by a 29-year-old man was traveling eastbound on I.H. 80 in the vicinity east of Malcom when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler collided with the rear-end of a Ford Econoline van occupied by three people ages 22, 34, and 39. Following that impact, the truck veered left, driving through the center median and entering the westbound lanes of the interstate. There, it was involved in a collision with an oncoming 18-wheeler occupied by a 29-year-old.
Reports state that the 29-year-old from the westbound truck suffered fatal injuries over the course of the accident. The other four people involved reportedly sustained injuries of unknown severity, as well; they were each transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this one occur, people often focus on the immediate collision, assuming it stems from a single mistake or miscalculation. However, my experience with commercial vehicle accident cases has taught me that wrecks involving 18-wheelers and multiple vehicles are rarely so straightforward. Instead, they typically result from a combination of factors that demand thorough investigation to fully understand.
One pressing question in this crash is why the eastbound truck collided with the van in the first place. Did the driver fail to maintain a safe following distance, or were they distracted, fatigued, or impaired? Was speed a contributing factor, or did a sudden mechanical failure render the truck uncontrollable? These possibilities require close scrutiny. Furthermore, investigators should assess whether the van was traveling or stopping in a way that may have created additional risk.
The next major issue is why the eastbound 18-wheeler veered into the westbound lanes after its initial collision. Was the vehicle’s structure compromised by the impact? Did the driver overcorrect or lose control entirely? These details are critical to understanding the sequence of events and determining if the crash could have been prevented at any stage.
The trucking companies involved in this crash also bear scrutiny. Companies have an obligation to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and their drivers are fit to operate heavy machinery safely. Were the trucks involved subject to regular inspections, and were any recent repairs completed properly? Did the companies place undue pressure on drivers to meet deadlines, potentially encouraging risky decisions? Exploring these aspects could reveal whether systemic issues within the companies contributed to the wreck.
Finally, it’s important to consider the safety measures of the vehicles themselves. Commercial trucks are often equipped with advanced safety systems like collision avoidance technology and automatic braking. Were such systems present and operational on the involved trucks? Similarly, reflective markings and properly maintained brake lights are essential for alerting other drivers to a truck’s presence and movements. A lack of these features could be a critical factor in a multi-vehicle crash like this one.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure the injured victims and the family of the deceased receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
