Mitchell County, TX — January 6, 2025, a man was injured following a truck accident at approximately 7:45 a.m. along Farm to Market 644.
According to authorities, a 51-year-old man from Loraine was traveling in a southbound Ford F-250 pickup truck on F.M. 644 at the F.M. 1982 intersection when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a westbound Kenworth 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow on F.M. 1982 entered the intersection at an apparently unsafe time, failing to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign. This resulted in a collision between the right side of the 18-wheeler and the front-end of the pickup truck. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, as well.
The man who had been in the pickup suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident. It doesn’t appear that anyone else was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this occur, they often seem deceptively straightforward: one vehicle allegedly failed to yield, and a collision followed. However, based on my years of experience handling cases involving commercial vehicle accidents, I know that understanding what truly happened often requires a much deeper dive. What factors led the 18-wheeler to enter the intersection at an unsafe time? Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or under pressure to meet a tight delivery schedule? Was there any indication of mechanical issues that could have impaired the truck’s ability to stop? These are critical questions that must be answered to piece together the chain of events.
Investigations into commercial vehicle accidents should also evaluate the role of the trucking company. Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, their drivers are properly trained, and their operations comply with all relevant safety regulations. Was the driver operating within federally mandated hours-of-service limits to prevent fatigue? Did the company emphasize safety in its operations, or were drivers pushed to prioritize speed and efficiency over caution? Such factors can often play a crucial role in incidents like this.
It’s equally important to scrutinize the truck itself for potential safety issues. Were all required safety systems, like brakes and lights, functioning properly? Was the trailer’s load securely fastened and within legal weight limits? Mechanical defects or improperly loaded cargo could contribute to a driver’s inability to stop or maintain control in critical moments.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
