Mitchell County, TX — January 6, 2025, a man was injured following a truck accident at approximately 7:45 a.m. along Farm to Market 644.
According to authorities, a 51-year-old man from Loraine was traveling in a southbound Ford F-250 pickup truck on F.M. 644 at the F.M. 1982 intersection when the accident took place.
The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a westbound Kenworth 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow on F.M. 1982 entered the intersection at an apparently unsafe time, failing to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign. This resulted in a collision between the right side of the 18-wheeler and the front-end of the pickup truck. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, as well.
The man who had been in the pickup suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident. It doesn’t appear that anyone else was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

What factors led the 18-wheeler to enter the intersection at an unsafe time? Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or under pressure to meet a tight delivery schedule? Was there any indication of mechanical issues that could have impaired the truck’s ability to stop? These are critical questions that must be answered to piece together the chain of events.
Investigations into commercial vehicle accidents should also evaluate the role of the trucking company. Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, their drivers are properly trained, and their operations comply with all relevant safety regulations. Was the driver operating within federally mandated hours-of-service limits to prevent fatigue?
