Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
This collision on Interstate 380 highlights the challenges of merging large vehicles onto high-speed roadways, especially during late-night hours. Understanding the sequence of events that led to the crash is critical to identifying responsibility and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The primary focus will likely be on the merging actions of the snowplow and the semi-truck. Merging requires careful coordination and awareness of surrounding traffic, and investigators will need to determine whether one of the vehicles failed to yield or misjudged the timing or space needed to complete the maneuver safely. Evidence such as vehicle positions, skid marks and any available dashcam footage will help clarify the drivers’ actions.
Another factor is whether the snowplow’s presence on the highway was adequately signaled to other drivers. Snowplows typically have flashing lights and markings to alert others to their presence, especially when operating in areas with active traffic. Investigators should confirm whether the plow’s warning systems were functional and visible at the time of the crash.
The semi-truck’s actions also deserve attention. Was the driver traveling at an appropriate speed and maintaining a safe distance to allow for adjustments when another vehicle merged? Commercial drivers are held to a higher standard of care due to the size and weight of their vehicles, which can make sudden maneuvers or stops more difficult.
Finally, the condition of the roadway at the time of the crash may be relevant. Snowplows are often active during or after winter storms, which could mean the road was icy or snow-covered. Investigators should consider whether the conditions reduced traction or visibility, contributing to the collision.
For the injured drivers, understanding what caused this crash is essential to ensuring accountability. A thorough investigation will help clarify whether driver actions, vehicle conditions or external factors played a role and may guide measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
