How Did This Accident Occur?

I’ve been doing this job for a long time—over three decades, in fact. I’ve seen how motorcyclists tend to get a bad rap. I wouldn’t be surprised if people glance at this accident and automatically blame the victim, just because they happened to be on a motorcycle. I, however, am not about to jump to that conclusion. There are too many factors that need to be considered, and the investigation is still ongoing. I’m interested to know what the investigation will reveal once it is complete.

A quick Google Maps search reveals that the intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. Who had the right-of-way at the time of the wreck? Did the pickup truck have a protected arrow, or did it make the turn without yielding when it should have? Or did the traffic light itself malfunction, giving contradicting signals to both vehicles? Traffic lights, while excellent tools, are not infallible, after all.

These are just a few of the questions authorities should be asking and answering as they investigate. Should they seem to be shortsighted in their investigation, a third party investigation can always take up that slack, just to ensure all the bases are covered. After all, the people left behind by the victims deserve to have a clear understanding of how and why this accident occurred. They certainly don’t need vague assumptions based solely on surface-level investigation.
