How Did This Accident Occur?

On hearing about a single-vehicle accident that happened late in the evening, most people are content to assume it was caused by driver error. Statistically speaking, that’s a safe bet; human error does play a role in the majority of car accidents. But I’ve been in this career for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of cases where the cause appeared to be one thing on the surface, but evidence of less likely causes were later unearthed by the investigation. That is why I hesitate to jump to conclusions.

To be clear, I’m not trying to insinuate that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the Toyota mechanically to lead to the accident. On top of that, there is the fact that the vehicle caught on fire. Despite what Hollywood depicts, most car accidents don’t end in flame. I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw played a role in the fact that, in this case, it did.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a trained professional in a laboratory setting would be able to bright to light any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaw that had a hand in the accident which might otherwise have flown under the radar. Hopefully, investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. That way, the people who were affected by this accident can be given a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how, but why things ended up the way they did.
