One of the biggest misconceptions I talk to people about is when they assume something is open-and-shut just because police say someone did something which is obviously wrong. If the reports here are true, it’s obviously a mistake to go through a stop sign without stopping. But there could be surrounding factors that make a resolution for the victim’s loved ones far more challenging than just holding someone accountable for running a stop sign.

For example, is there an issue with this intersection that obstructs visibility for drivers? Was the tractor in a state of disrepair that led to brake failure? Was this some unusual, unforeseeable vehicle defect? Was the tractor operator an employee who wasn’t properly vetted or trained? Were they in a hurry due to pressure from an employer that enforced unreasonable deadlines? Do these kinds of accidents happen in this area a lot? Have there been preexisting issues locals have expressed concern about to officials?

If investigators just move on at the first sign of having someone to blame, they risk missing a more serious root cause that could lead to other accidents in the future. Thinking back to the families I’ve helped across 30 years of handling fatal accident cases, accountability was certainly a priority. They wanted to be sure there would be appropriate consequences for those responsible for the accident. But they were just as keen on getting the whole story, and if there was an opportunity to help ensure other families wouldn’t suffer the same harms they did, they took it.

That’s why, regardless of the seemingly straight-forward details currently available about this accident, I have to wonder if investigators here are being thorough enough to get the victim’s loved ones the full story they deserve.
