Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s disheartening to see news of yet another hit-and-run; for the life of me, I’ll never understand how anyone could mentally justify such a callous act. Anyone willing to leave a person in the road to save their own hide deserves everything they get, but ensuring they face consequences first requires finding them.

It’s encouraging that police seem to know the make, model, color, and unique damage of the runaway vehicle. Hopefully the details they released will help people identify the truck; someone might see it drive by, or a local business security camera might pick it up. We’ve even seen more than a few cases where a body shop employee alerted police after someone brought a vehicle with suspicious damage in.

Who- or whatever finally helps bring in the suspect, once they’re in custody I hope investigators will find out what they were thinking. Sometimes sheer panic makes people do regrettable things, but over the years we’ve seen a lot of drivers flee the scene to try and hide something else they didn’t want found—drugs, speeding, drunk driving, warrants, you name it. Only time and careful investigation could say if any of those played a part in Travis County, but one thing is certain: That pedestrian’s loved ones deserve real answers. Anything beyond that would depend on what those answers are.
