How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people, upon hearing about accidents like this one, are quick to judge the pedestrian for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I however, am not so eager to jump to conclusions after being in this line of business for over three decades. There could have been any number of things that contributed to the accident that are not apparent at first glance.

I’m not trying to insinuate that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just can’t help wondering about several different aspects that I hope the investigators are considering as well. What, for example, is the pedestrian infrastructure like in that area? Are there enough crosswalks and sidewalks? What about the street lighting? On top of that, I would like to know more about the Dodge. Was it equipped with pedestrian detection? If so, did it somehow malfunction at the time of the collision? What about it’s brakes and steering? Were either of those faulty at the time, making it difficult or impossible to avoid a collision when it really shouldn’t have been?

Hopefully, the investigators, whether the authorities or a third party, are putting in the time and effort necessary to get to the bottom of it. They will have to be thorough and openminded in order to do so, I’m sure. But that is the kind of investigation that the victim deserves. Surface-level investigation that conveniently places all the blame on the shoulders of the pedestrian just won’t cut it.
