How Did This Accident Occur?
I can imagine that most people would be asking the question, “what was a pedestrian doing in that area in the middle of the night?” After the year’s I’ve spent analyzing pedestrian involved car accidents, however, what I want to know is not why the pedestrian was there, but whether or not there were factors at play that do not seem immediately obvious.
Firstly, the accident occurred in the dead of night. Was there sufficient street lighting in the area? Were the lights on the Mustang working properly? Were there whether conditions at the time that may have impacted visibility?
Secondly, was there infrastructure in place for pedestrian use? Are there enough sidewalks available? Does the vicinity have a sufficient number of crosswalks?
Lastly, did the Mustang have have safety systems in place, such as pedestrian detection? If so, were they functioning as designed, or did they malfunction?
Hopefully, the authorities who are in charge of investigating this accident are meticulous yet open-minded enough to look into these questions. That way, all of the factors that played a part in the wreck—including the less obvious ones—can be brought to light.
Do you think it’s important for investigators to look into things like that, or do you think it would be a waste of time and resources? Feel free to leave a comment to let me know.
