Santa Rosa, CA — August 29, 2024, one person was killed and nine others were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident shortly after 11:45 a.m. along S.H. 12.
According to authorities, eleven vehicles were at a stop due to a red light on State Highway 12 at the Fulton Road intersection when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a dump truck that had been approaching the intersection failed to properly control it’s speed; it reportedly rear-ended a pickup truck, leading to a chain reaction of collisions with the line of traffic. The pickup truck apparently ended up becoming engulfed in flames due to the wreck. The man who had been inside the pickup suffered fatal injuries as a result.
Nine others who were involved in the wreck sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity. Those who needed it were transported to local medical facilities by EMS for treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this occur, it’s easy to think they stem from simple driver error. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks often have more complex causes that require thorough investigation.
In this case, the dump truck’s failure to stop for the line of vehicles raises critical questions. Was the driver distracted or fatigued? Did the truck experience a mechanical failure, such as brake issues, that prevented it from stopping in time? These factors are essential to explore, as they could significantly affect the determination of fault and liability.
The importance of regular truck maintenance cannot be overstated in situations like this. Proper maintenance ensures that all critical systems, such as brakes, tires, and steering, are functioning correctly. Neglecting these can lead to catastrophic failures at the worst possible moments, such as when approaching a line of stopped vehicles. Routine inspections and timely repairs are vital to prevent accidents caused by mechanical issues.
Additionally, if the dump truck involved was operating under a commercial trucking company, that company might share responsibility for the crash. Companies are required to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and their drivers are well-trained and alert. Any lapses in these areas could have contributed to this devastating chain-reaction collision.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
