Accident Report

Orangeburg County, SC —May 8, 2026, one person was killed and another person was injured in a truck accident at about 2:45 a.m. on State Highway 3/Whetstone Road.

Authorities said a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck was heading north when it collided with a 2023 Mercedes-Benz box truck that was backing onto the road near the intersection with U.S. Route 178/North Road west of Woodford.

The box truck driver, whose name has not been made public yet, died after being transported to a local hospital, according to authorities.

The semi-truck driver was hospitalized with unspecified injuries, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Orangeburg County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Backing up can be a risky proposition for any vehicle, but especially for a box truck with limited sightlines. Did the box truck driver have anyone looking out to ensure it was safe to back up into the road? Did box truck reverse slowly or charge out into the road? Could the semi-truck driver have done anything to avoid the crash? The best way to sort out what happened is to wait until the investigation into this crash is completed.

Authorities will gather facts from physical evidence, data from the trucks and any available witness statements or video footage. Many trucking companies have equipped their fleets with cameras, so investigators may be able to see how this crash unfolded. Cell phone records could show if either driver was distracted at the time of the crash.

An outside investigation may be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for the kind of forensic examination that may be needed here.

A thorough investigation should provide the box truck driver’s family with answers to any lingering questions they may have about this accident.
