Gardendale, TX — May 14, 2022, Obed Acosta was fatally injured as the result of an explosion at a work site at 9:45 a.m. along FM 1788.

Information included in a public accident summary from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration says that the incident happened at 9:45 a.m. along the 9600 block of FM 1788, an area north of Highway 158.

Preliminary information says that 31-year-old Obed Acosta was part of a crew working in the area of a tanker trailer. A torch was apparently being used to seal leaks at the time when, according to authorities, hydrogen sulfide ignited. This caused an explosion that injured three employees Acosta was one of those workers, and details show he succumbed to his injuries on May 23.

Right now, additional details about the incident are unclear. OSHA statements listed two alleged safety violations which were deemed “serious.” The reports also include a recommended penalty for $14,211. It’s unclear right now what the status of those possible penalties is. No further information can be confirmed at this time.
