Accident Report

March 12, 2026, Martin Ramirez and another person were hurt in a car accident just after 10:30 p.m. along Interstate Highway 45.

According to authorities, two people—35-year-old Martin Ramirez and a 25-year-old woman—were traveling in a southeast bound Chevrolet Equinox on Gulf Freeway at Fuqua Street when the accident took place. A police vehicle was apparently parked and unoccupied with its lights activated in the southeast bound lanes. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Equinox rear-ended the police vehicle.

Ramirez reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. The woman who had been a passenger in the Equinox suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people will glance at this accident and assume the collision was due to driver error without giving it a second thought. Statistically speaking, that’s a safe bet. Human error does play a role in the majority of car accidents. But after three decades of being in this line of work, I can’t help but to wonder if there was something else at play that was not immediately apparent.

That’s not to say that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the collision could have been caused by brake failure or some issue with the steering mechanism. While not likely, they are certainly not outside of the realm of possibilities.

Hopefully, investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Equinox. That way, any underlying mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might have had a hand in the wreck won’t fly under the radar. After all, the people affected by this wreck deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
