Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

While I certainly can’t say what happened here without seeing more information, I have a hard time believing a truck driver wouldn’t notice losing two tires on the interstate. Even if they didn’t, most truckers would see the issue once they reached their destination, connect the dots, and come forward to cooperate with the investigations. The fact that hasn’t yet happened here raises the serious concern that someone responsible for this accident is intentionally trying to escape consequences.

Even if the driver is located, there are many other questions in need of answers. Why didn’t the driver stop? How did they lose the tires in the first place? Were they not fastened properly? Did they fail due to a company’s lack of maintenance? Did the driver not perform a thorough pre-trip check to catch those issues? Does the driver work for a company with other trucks capable of this sort of accident? Is there an employer complicit in one of their employees not coming forward to take responsibility for this?

I hope authorities are hard at work getting more information to release to the public. When a vehicle leaves the scene, the public is almost always a useful tool to getting a lead so that authorities can locate and investigate the driver. Anyone out there who thinks they may know something would be wise to come forward as soon as possible, if only for the sake of the victims and families involved.
