UPDATE (July 6, 2023): Authorities identified the driver killed in the accident as 24-year-old Joseph Kelly. There are still pending charges for the truck driver. Right now, however, there are no additional details about the crash available. Investigations are ongoing.
Suffolk County, NY — July 3, 2023, one person was killed and two people were injured following a garbage truck accident at 9:00 a.m. on Express Drive South.
Preliminary information about the fatal crash says that it happened along the Long Island Expressway at the intersection of Express Drive South and Motor Parkway.
According to authorities, vehicles were stopped at a red light along the Expressway service road. While they were there, for reasons not currently clear, a garbage truck apparently failed to slow down, crashing into the vehicles at the light.
Due to this collision, a man inside one of the vehicles sustained fatal injuries. Two others involved were taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. There was a school bus involved, but reports say no one on the bus was hurt.
Currently, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
