Cameron County, TX — August 30, 2024, Jose Juan Mendoza was killed and two others were injured in a car accident at around 8:30 p.m. along North Sam Houston Blvd.
According to officials, the accident happened near the intersection of North Sam Houston Boulevard and Wiesman Road.
Investigators said that that 18-year-old Jose Juan Mendoza was in a Toyota going southbound on Sam Houston. Up ahead, an oncoming Dodge Caravan attempted to turn left toward a residence. In doing so, the two vehicles collided. Mendoza was killed as a result. Two people from the Dodge had unspecified injuries.
Right now, there are no other confirmed details about the crash.

Even though this crash involves typical motor vehicles, it could present unique challenges depending on what happened. It’s not always as simple as finding out who had the right-of-way or if someone was on their phone.
For example, if alcohol was a factor here, that could lead to investigations into where the alcohol came from. What could initially seem like a typical car wreck could become a case involving a drunk driver as well as a negligent alcohol provider who is responsible for unlawfully over-serving that person. That’s not something authorities tend to handle just through standard investigations alone. That’s why I have to wonder how investigations are being handled here and if the victim’s loved ones are going to get the answers they deserve.
