Right now, no other details can be confirmed. Without more specifics, I can’t help wondering: did this crash really have to be fatal? Generally speaking, if two people collide head-on, they tend to come out with at least comparable injuries. Authorities haven’t said anything about someone not wearing their seatbelt, and the person who died was in the larger vehicle. Frankly, this can be a serious red flag that something unusual might have occurred.

A disparity in injuries this extreme can sometimes be a sign of a defect with the victim’s vehicle. For instance, if accident reconstructionists determined someone in the same kind of crash with working airbags and seatbelts should have survived, what was different for the victim? Sheer, one-in-a-million bad luck? Or, did something that was meant to protect the victim fail to do so?

Unfortunately, those aren’t the kinds of questions authorities are typically equipped to answer on their own. Authorities here could prove differently, of course. My concern, though, is that if this crash has just been handled like any run-of-the-mill fender bender, authorities may have missed something crucial that needs to be brought to light.
