How Did This Accident Occur?

When two vehicles going the same direction collide, it is often the result of things like unsafe speeds or inattentive driving. This early in the morning, I would also expect accident investigators to look for alcohol and signs of fatigue, as well. But a proper investigation should also be able to rule out or confirm unusual possible factors. Otherwise, something important could slip through the cracks.

For example, was there another reckless driver involved here that left the scene? Just about everyone has been in a situation on the freeway where someone slams on their brakes or cuts into a lane suddenly, and you have to swerve to avoid them. Sometimes, that can result in a crash if there’s already another vehicle over in that lane. Could that have happened here? Was the victim able to give their side of the story, or were they too seriously injured to speak with authorities on the scene? Did authorities get any video footage of the crash? Are there any independent witnesses?

These are things I keep in mind after any serious accident comes across my desk. I do my best to shine a light on this process because a lot of people still think crash investigations are some automatic, one-size-fits-all process. That’s just not true. Each crash can involve unique factors, and getting clear answers usually requires having the experience and tools to adjust on the fly. If authorities have been able to do that and preserve crucial evidence, that would be good to hear. It wouldn’t be unusual, though, if digging into the details required independent accident reconstructionists stepping in.
