Authorities seem to have recommended the driver be charged due to allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. If that’s true, then there could be more to this story authorities have yet to address. It often surprises people to learn alcohol-related accidents often have an accomplice who can also be held responsible: an alcohol provider.

Simply put, alcohol providers can be responsible for someone getting hurt if the drunk driver responsible was illegally over-served by that establishment. Servers can face criminal charges, the establishment can be fined or have their license taken away, and they can be liable for the injuries that resulted from their negligent service.

In short, this area of the law is a way to make sure there is full accountability for actions leading to someone being seriously hurt. The burden on a family whose loved one is seriously hurt in a drunk driving crash can be immense. Why should they bear that burden alone when Texas law gives them avenues to alleviate the burden while also holding wrongdoers accountable? Any reasonable person would agree that if someone breaks the law, and people get hurt as a result, there should be appropriate consequences. It just remains to be seen how many wrongdoers here will ultimately have to face those consequences.
