Jadrienne Radway, 2 Injured in Car Accident on F.M. 879 in Ellis County, TX

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a northwest bound Toyota Highlander occupied by a 19-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a collision with the oncoming pickup truck. The Highlander reportedly caught on fire due to the accident.

Both Radway and the boy from the Highlander sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident, according to reports; the woman who had been behind the wheel of the Highlander suffered minor injuries, as well. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When serious injuries follow a head-on collision, there’s no substitute for asking the right questions. The visible wreckage might tell part of the story, but true accountability comes from examining what happened before impact.

Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
When a vehicle crosses the center line, it may seem like the cause is obvious. But good investigations go further, reconstructing what led to the departure—speed, road position, and any pre-crash movements that might point to driver distraction, fatigue, or a medical event. Was the scene mapped thoroughly? Did investigators gather statements from those involved and any witnesses? These steps are vital when injuries are as severe as these.

Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A sudden swerve into oncoming traffic could stem from more than human error. Tire failures, suspension issues, or even brake imbalances can all lead to a car drifting or pulling unexpectedly. Did anyone inspect the Highlander for mechanical problems? And given that the vehicle caught fire, was there any follow-up to determine if a faulty fuel system or electrical malfunction contributed to the severity?

Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both vehicles likely contain onboard computers capable of recording speed, steering input, and braking behavior. If retrieved, this data could confirm whether the Highlander veered suddenly or gradually—and whether the Tacoma had time to react. These insights go beyond the visual aftermath and into the real timeline of events, helping determine if this was avoidable and how quickly it unfolded.

The stakes are highest in crashes like these, where multiple people are hurt and the circumstances aren’t fully clear. Without asking deeper questions, it’s easy to accept a partial version of the truth.

3 Key Takeaways:

  • Crossing the center line demands a detailed reconstruction of driver behavior.
  • Mechanical defects, especially in cases involving post-crash fires, should be explored.
  • Vehicle data could clarify timing, speed, and missed opportunities to avoid impact.
