According to authorities, the incident happened around 7:20 p.m. on Farm to Market 1053 near State Highway 329 in the Imperial area. Preliminary investigation suggests the three teens were in a northbound Jeep Wrangler on the roadway as Gary Liles drove a GMC Sierra south nearby in the opposite lane.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It often sets off alarm bells for me when I read about a catastrophic accident involving a Jeep vehicle—particularly when that vehicle catches fire during the crash.

Most folks don’t have as much of a reason to keep a watchful eye on product recall notices as I do, but Jeep’s line of vehicles has historically had a few troubles with fault parts and preventable fires. Those fires have a tendency to make an already-bad situation far worse, and to increase the chances of a survivable collision becoming fatal.

I’m not saying I know something police don’t about the accident on FM 1053, nor am I pointing fingers where none may be due. It just seems that so far that news sources don’t have a particularly good grasp of what happened. Not much time has passed, so it’s quite possible investigators are still connecting the dots. I just hope they have the resources to include forensic vehicle examination in their efforts, in case at least some of the devastating damage shouldn’t have occurred. Only time and careful investigation could tell.
