Accident Report
March 15, 2026, Idunuoluwa Ebenezer, Temiloluwa Alu, and a teen were killed and three others were hurt just after 9:00 a.m. in an alleged drunk driver accident on U.S. 90.
According to authorities, five people—44-year-old Idunuoluwa Ebenezer, 18-year-old Temiloluwa Alu, a 17-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy—were traveling in an eastbound Hyundai Santa Fe on U.S. Highway 90 in the vicinity east of the Pitts Road intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that a Toyota Tacoma being driven by a 20-year-old man who had allegedly been intoxicated by alcohol at the time was heading westbound. The pickup apparently veered left, crossed over the center median, and crashed head-on with the oncoming Santa Fe.
Idunuoluwa Ebenezer, Temiloluwa Alu, and the 17-year-old—who had reportedly sustained fatal injuries due to the collision, were declared deceased at the scene. The 14-year-old and 4-year-old from the Santa Fe suffered serious injuries, as well, according to reports. The man behind the wheel of the Tacoma was seriously hurt, too, it was noted. All three of them were transported by EMS to area medical facilities in order to receive necessary treatment.
Authorities have apparently taken the man into custody and are recommending three charges of Intoxication Manslaughter, and two charges of Intoxication Assault against him. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Reading about this accident, it’s clear that the authorities believe the pickup truck driver was intoxicated by alcohol at the time of the wreck. I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of alcohol-related car accidents over the last three decades; every one of them is complex and layered. Sometimes, the decisions people made well before the accident took place played a direct role in the outcome of the wreck. In this case, I would want to know where the driver had been drinking before the wreck.
If he had been drinking at a private residence, then that’s one thing. However, if he had been drinking at an establishment that sells alcohol—such as a restaurant or a bar—then that is another matter. Why? Because there is a possibility, no matter how slim, that he was overserved. If he was already obviously intoxicated, yet people continued to serve him additional drinks, regardless, then their choice to overserve him played a role in the eventual wreck caused by his intoxicated state.
Okay, so what if he was overserved? What does knowing that do for us? Well, Texas has a tool in place called Dram Shop Law. It allows for establishments that overserve customers to be held accountable for the role they played in accidents caused by people they overserve. Hopefully, investigators looking into this accident—whether the authorities or a third party—look beyond the physical scene of the crash in order to find everyone who had a hand in its outcome; that way, everyone who bears a portion of the responsibility for what happened can be held accountable.
What do you think about this possibility? Had you ever hear of Dram Shop Law before? Feel free to leave a comment below letting me know.
