Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People may be quick to jump conclusions, considering this was a rear-end collision. The problem, though, is that uncommon things happen, and jumping to conclusions only risks missing something important. Even authorities can be guilty of rushing to judgment without actually letting the evidence speak for itself.
For example, I had a case not long ago where someone died in a crash, and authorities concluded that the victim hadn’t been wearing their seatbelt. But the family knew the driver to be very safety conscious, so that was shocking to hear. They wanted a second opinion, and that led to the discovery that the victim had a defective seatbelt which led to fatal injuries they otherwise would have avoided.
I’m not suggesting something unusual like that happened here, but it’s important to know whether or not authorities can rule out that sort of thing. If they’re dedicating ample time and resources to getting answers, they may be able to satisfy whatever doubts could be surrounding this crash. Otherwise, if the answers they’re getting seem insufficient, they could be missing something important.
