If the allegations here are true, it’s just a shame to see yet another life taken by drunk driving. It’s all too common in Texas, and it’s no wonder the public calls for there to be consequences whenever it happens. When they do so, though, they often are only getting half the picture. Many accidents like this involve more than just a drunk driver. They often involve negligent alcohol providers who illegally over-served the drunk driver, and they, too, can be held accountable.

The problem, though, is authorities tend to have their hands full with the drunk drivers. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers. It’s not often that our investigations are happening parallel to the authorities. In fact, we often have to bring evidence to the authorities before they take their own steps to see the establishments held accountable. Maybe authorities here are being more thorough, or maybe there was no outside party involved here. However, it’s important to let the evidence say that one way or the other. It would be right for someone to lose their life, another to face potentially years in prison, and for a local establishment to be let off the hook like they did nothing wrong.
