Dawson County, TX — April 22, 2025, Deputy Jessie Perez was fatally injured following a possible truck accident at around 12:30 p.m. along U.S Highway 180.
Initial details about the accident say it happened along the side of U.S. 180 during a traffic stop.

Reports at this time say that 42-year-old Dawson County Sheriff’s Deputy Jessie Perez was along the side of the highway conducting a traffic stop. While doing so, “debris from a passing commercial vehicle” struck Deputy Perez. Due to this, Deputy Perez was killed.
Right now, there are no specifics about what hit Deputy Jessie Perez, if it fell from the commercial vehicle, or if the commercial vehicle driver has spoken with authorities. Investigations are ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
There are certainly a lot of unknowns here, including whether or not the vehicle supposedly involved here even stayed at the scene or has been identified. Was this debris something in the roadway, or did it fall from the commercial vehicle? Was it a shredded tire, and if so, has that tire been preserved for a closer inspection? With accidents like this, my concern is people may be a bit quick to assume the unusual details could make all of this “unavoidable.” At the end of the day, though, it’s important to let the evidence speak for itself. Maybe this all was just an unavoidable accident, but it could be that a series of mistakes led to someone’s loved one losing their life. That can’t be ignored.
