Smith County, TX — March 8, 2024, David Watson was killed as the result of a car accident at around 1:00 a.m. along Highway 110.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened near Tollway 49 southeast of Tyler.

It appears 47-yearold David William Watson was in a Jeep Wrangler going eastbound along the tollway. While making a left turn onto northbound lanes of Highway 110, the Jeep somehow ran off-road. There, it crashed into a traffic signal, then overturned. As a result, Watson sustained fatal injuries. there did not appear to be anyone else involved in the crash.
Right now, the factors surrounding the crash can’t be confirmed.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Hopefully authorities have been investigating even unlikely possible circumstances the driver may have had little or no control over. Were there mechanical issues? Was there an issue with the roadway itself? Was the driver illegally over-served by a bar? Did they have a medical emergency?
The reason I bring up these possibilities is not to imply they happened here. I can’t say one way or the other what caused this crash. The problem, is that single-vehicle accidents often slip through the cracks because authorities often jump to conclusions. Simply put, it’s far more common for a driver’s mistakes to lead to a single-vehicle crash. As such, authorities pressured to move on to other responsibilities which their department sees as higher priority may hastily blame the crash on what they feel is the most likely explanation. Inevitably, that leads to false accusations and incomplete investigations.
That sort of haphazard investigation isn’t something a grieving family is going to accept—rightfully so. They deserve to know they’re getting the whole story. That’s why it’s often prudent that these accidents are put in the hands of experienced and well-equipped accident reconstructionists. Doing so can help to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks. Right now, I see no reason why this crash would be an exception.
