People often think that single-vehicle accidents are simple because there’s just one vehicle involved. However, they can be as complex as any serious crash. The real challenge is that they tend to be treated as a lower priority by police, and that can lead to important details slipping through the cracks. It can be crucial, then, for folks to follow up with authorities and find out what sort of investigations they’ve done.
Did authorities have the time, training, and resources to properly investigate? Officers may not always have the tools or experience to conduct a full accident reconstruction, which can lead to overlooked details. A vehicle veering off the road could be influenced by road hazards, poor lighting, or an evasive maneuver. Were skid marks, road conditions, and other contributing factors properly examined?
Did they check for possible vehicle defects? Brake failures, steering malfunctions, or sudden power loss could cause a driver to lose control. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, injuries could have been more severe than they should have been. Was the vehicle thoroughly inspected before key evidence was lost?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may contain data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS data, cellphone activity, or nearby surveillance footage could also provide valuable insight. Were investigators proactive in preserving this information?
If authorities can show they’ve covered these bases, then it’s likely that they’ve been thorough in their investigations. However, if they can’t provide clear answers to victims and families, that can be a sign that there needs to be secondary investigations to ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
