How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people would assume this crash was caused by driver error or fatigue. That isn’t a wild idea after midnight, but over the course of my career I’ve learned that assumptions are no substitute for facts in accident investigations. A full investigation should yield the facts needed to piece together how this accident happened.

Did another vehicle force the Cadillac to swerve into the barrier? Did the Cadillac have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? These are possibilities, based on crashes I’ve seen in my career, that investigators should consider as they pore over witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the vehicle and any available video of the accident. Outside experts may be needed to determine if a medical issue or mechanical defect contributed to this crash.
