UPDATE (January 21, 2025): Recent reports have been released which identify one of the people who were injured in the SUV in this accident as Colby Simpson, who had been a passenger. No additional details are currently available. Investigations continue.

Houston, TX — January 14, 2025, two people were injured following a car accident at approximately 6:00 a.m. along Interstate Highway 69.

According to authorities, two people were traveling in a northbound SUV in the elevated HOV lane of I.H. 69 at Beltway 8 when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the SUV crashed through a concrete barrier of the elevated lane, crashing down onto the ground level northbound lanes below. The two people who had been inside the SUV at the time of the wreck suffered critical injuries and were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment.

Two vehicles were apparently struck by the SUV, as well, though it doesn’t appear that anyone else was seriously injured. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a vehicle crashes through a barrier and falls from an elevated roadway, it raises serious questions about what went wrong. While some might assume driver error was the main factor, my experience handling cases like this has shown that structural integrity, road conditions, and even mechanical failures can all play a role. Understanding what led to this accident requires asking a few critical questions.

Did investigators thoroughly examine whether the HOV lane’s barrier performed as expected? Elevated roadways are designed with barriers meant to prevent exactly this kind of incident. If a vehicle managed to breach that barrier, investigators should determine whether it was due to the vehicle’s speed and angle of impact or if the barrier itself had structural weaknesses. Similar incidents in the past have sometimes pointed to barriers that failed to meet safety standards.

Could mechanical issues or road conditions have contributed to the crash? If the SUV experienced a tire blowout, brake failure, or steering issue, that could explain why it lost control in the first place. Additionally, elevated lanes can be prone to ice buildup or other hazards that make vehicles more difficult to control. A thorough inspection of the SUV and the roadway is necessary to rule out these possibilities.

Has all available electronic and video evidence been collected? Many highways have traffic cameras that could have captured the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, data from the SUV’s onboard computer could provide insights into the vehicle’s speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. Without this evidence, investigators might be left with more speculation than concrete answers.

Accidents like this, where Colby Simpson and another person suffered serious injuries, demand a meticulous investigation to uncover all contributing factors. Addressing these questions helps ensure the incident is fully understood and provides the foundation for any necessary steps to ensure accountability. A thorough investigation is the least that can be done to provide clarity and closure for those affected.
