How Did This Accident Occur?

When cars crash at an intersection like this, people tend to assume that it was because someone was on their phone or otherwise not paying attention. That’s certainly common. Most every car accident investigation I’m a part of prioritizes pulling cellphone records for that very reason. But a proper accident reconstruction doesn’t focus on a conclusions until all other possibilities have been ruled out, as well.

Just as an example, have authorities inspected the vehicles for potential defects? Especially with two people not around to give their side of the story, it’s up to investigators to preserve evidence and find out if anything unusual happened. Authorities don’t have the tools or the training to inspect for things like brake failure, electronics issues, automatic driving systems malfunctions, or other potential vehicle issues. As a result, if there aren’t independent professionals stepping in to rule those things out, something important could slip through the cracks.

Likely or not, it’s important to know all possible factors will receive attention from investigators. The victims and families affected by the crash deserve to know that they’re getting the whole story, and they shouldn’t be left with any doubts or concerns. If authorities can address all of those concerns on their own, that’s good. It’s just not at all unusual for them to need another set of eyes looking things over to make sure nothing slipped by the initial investigations.
