Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When an 18-wheeler overturns in a multi-vehicle crash resulting in fatalities and injuries, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, wrecks like this rarely occur without multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.

What caused the initial collision? With multiple vehicles involved, investigators need to determine which actions led to the impact. Did the truck lose control before or after the collision? Did the Tahoe’s driver have time to react? Reviewing black box data, dashcam footage, and crash scene evidence could provide crucial insights.

Why did the 18-wheeler overturn? Large trucks are designed for stability, so a rollover suggests excessive speed, improper braking, shifting cargo, or a sudden maneuver. Investigators should determine whether the driver overcorrected, lost traction, or was unable to maintain control due to the condition of the truck or road.

Did defective or slick tires contribute? Reports suggest the Peterbilt may have been operating with compromised tires, which could have affected braking and stability. Investigators should determine whether the truck was properly maintained and whether the tire condition met safety standards. Reviewing maintenance logs, inspection reports, and company safety records could help establish whether preventable equipment failure played a role.

Did the trucking company play a role? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy. If this truck was operating with known tire defects, that raises serious concerns about maintenance policies. Investigators should review company maintenance practices, past safety violations, and whether inspections were properly conducted.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity they deserve.
