A passenger in the Honda, 53-year-old Conroe resident Adelaida Gomez, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash south of Orphanage Road, according to authorities. It is unclear if the driver was injured.

How Did This Accident Occur?
Wrong-way crashes typically are attributed to an intoxicated driver, but there is not any indication that alcohol contributed to this crash. That means investigators must consider other causes for this accident.
Did the Chevrolet drive into oncoming traffic because of a problem with its steering mechanism? Did it enter the wrong side of the highway because signage was missing or damaged?
Police must have a theory, because the Chevrolet driver was arrested for negligent homicide, but authorities have not explained what led them to that conclusion.
Investigators must sort out what happened on U.S. 77 by poring over evidence from the scene, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records may show what the drivers were doing before the crash. An outside expert likely will be needed if a vehicle defect is suspected, because in my experience most law enforcement agencies aren’t trained for such reviews.
These steps are essential to provide answers for the victim’s family after this crash.
